Michael is an experienced contractor, who began his career when he left school in April 1960 to start a five-year apprenticeship as a mason/bricklayer with H.A.Brooking & Son of Chillington (no longer in existence).

Having learned his trade from a skilled team, by 1973 Michael and Gill were newly married and had just finished building their own bungalow in Frogmore in their ‘spare time’.  Deciding they had enough experience to start their own building business, they formed a partnership in April 1973 - a year otherwise known for the introduction of VAT and decimalisation.

Together, they built new properties for a number of clients (the first bungalow in 1974 was built for less than £10,000.00). They also did alteration and refurbishment project work in and around the South Hams.

One of the company’s most interesting projects came in 1975, on a monument called Thirst for Living Waters, which was situated opposite Charleton Primary School. When the monument was later taken down to enable the road to be widened, Michael and Gill obtained the contract from Devon Count Council to rebuild it further down the road for a fee of £500.

Another stand-out moment was being awarded the contract to carry out alterations at Malborough Church in 2014, including the pew alignment and associated work as well as the development of the new toilet area, choir room and gallery.

Jonathan joined the company in 1991 as an apprentice carpenter. After passing his exams, working on site and attending collage in Plymouth he qualified in 1993 and then became a partner in 2012.

Today, Jonathan has taken over the running of the projects, and while Michael has largely retired he continues to provide support with estimating and advice when it’s required.  Michael’s last project as Project Manager was in 2018/19, developing a new bungalow in Kingsbridge for Gill and himself, for which the company was awarded a Building Excellence Award from Devon Building Control.

To this day, the company prides itself on having the experience and know-how to build or refurbish properties to a high standard using competent tradesmen at a competitive price.
